If your child shows an interest in sewing and is past the point of being satisfied with hand stitching, you may want to get them a starter sewing machine so that they can hone their skills while 1) staying safe and 2) not overwhelming them.
Habits stick better the younger you are, so a habit for and love of sewing is something that can stay with your child throughout his or her life. Even if they don’t end up sewing as a career, knowing how to make your own clothes, pillow covers, or even feeling comfortable repairing a seam or replacing a zipper can save time and money and promotes an independent and creative spirit.
It’s important to look for a sewing machine on which they can learn the ins and outs of sewing but not harm themselves. Many beginning machines have a built-in needle threader, which makes things a little easier for little hands and also reduces the chance that they’ll prick themselves.

You also want to make sure the machine is lightweight and not too bulky. A younger child, especially, will benefit from smaller proportions to match their arm length, hand size, and height.
If it’s lightweight, your child will be able to clean up after themselves and put the machine away when they’re done. And if you sign your son or daughter up for a sewing class, a portable and lightweight machine will be easy for them to carry to and from class.
It also doesn’t make sense to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a fancy adult sewing machine that has more features than your child is ready for.
You might want a machine that comes with a good manual and perhaps a DVD for instruction. However, there are many great how-to videos on the Internet. Singer also has social media platforms that your child can connect with for tips and tutorials.
Well, let’s thread up and look at the best sewing machines for kids!

8. Janome Portable Sewing Machine
Product Highlights
The Janome Portable Sewing Machine is a mini-sized sewing machine that might look like a toy but is a fully functional machine. It has every feature you need to complete great sewing projects.
It’s only 5 pounds, and is lightweight and easy to move wherever you want to sew, whether it’s at home, in class, or with friends.
The Janome Portable Sewing Machine will satisfy the curiosity of a beginning hobbyist and the basic needs of a more advanced sewing artist. With an established brand like Janome, you can feel confident in its ability to do what it says it does: provide the features necessary to complete many sewing projects, such as simple sewing tasks, mending, scrapbooking, and papercrafts.
It’s a great machine to learn on and a good choice for a portable (only 5 pounds!) second machine when you don’t need to pull out the full-size mama machine. Janome advertises this as good for dorm rooms, sewing classes, apartments, and sewing with friends.
The Janome Portable offers a wide variety of stitches to practice and develop your skills with. It has five straight stitches for basic sewing and zipper insertion; three Zigzag stitches for garment construction and mending; a two-position crescent (scallop) stitch for embellishing and applique; and a multi-stitch Zigzag for knits and stretch fabrics.
The Janome Compact also sews in reverse, has a free arm for hemming and sleeves, offers a clear cover top drop-in bobbin, and has a presser foot with a finger guard for safety. Threading diagrams are a great guide for children learning to sew.
For the best stitch results, use a high-quality thread, monitor upper and lower thread, and remember that a lightweight and compact machine has limitations in the thickness and type of material it can handle.
Specifications: 10.5 x 5 x 9 inches and 5 pounds
Features
- Free Arm
- Storage drawer
- 10 built-in stitches
- Compact and portable
- Presser foot with finger guard
What We Like About Janome Portable Sewing Machine
The Janome Portable Sewing Machine sews a little more slowly than a full-size machine, which is perfect for a child who is learning how to sew. It doesn’t have an on/off switch and only sews when you use the foot pedal (when the power cord is plugged in). This feature ensures that a beginner has a little more control over what they’re sewing.
Another great feature for beginners and children is the clear drop-in bobbin, which is a lot easier to manage. It has a good variety of stitches to practice with, and although it is only 5 pounds, it’s a well-made machine.
We’re especially fond of the finger guard on the presser foot, an excellent safety feature for younger sewing enthusiasts.
The instruction manual is clear, and although the machine has all the basic features, it’s not complicated by a lot of the extra features that a full-sized, more advanced machine has, so it’s easier for a child or beginner to practice the basics without being overwhelmed. At the same time, it’s of a higher quality than many mini-machines, so children won’t be frustrated by something that doesn’t function properly.
What We Don’t Like About Janome Portable Sewing Machine
It’s unfortunate that there is no light on this machine. Although the finger guard is a great feature, it does make threading more challenging.
PROS
- Great starter machine
- Threading instructions printed on machine
- Finger guard on presser foot
- Top drop-in bobbin
- Strong stitches
CONS
- Frequently unthreads
- Hard to thread around the finger guard
- No light

Final Verdict
Our top pick for Best Sewing Machine for Kids is the SINGER Start 1304. You can’t go wrong with the trusted SINGER brand. It’s great that they have designed a sturdy machine that is a simplified yet complete version of their more advanced models.
Everyone needs to start somewhere when learning a new skill, and one needs the correct tools to be challenged yet not overwhelmed. The manual controls on this beginner’s model are sturdy and lasting. And they’ve built the most popular stitches right into the machine, and because the stitches are width- and length-controlled, children and beginners can knock it out of the park immediately with their sewing skills.
They can learn and create something they’re proud of simultaneously. What a win-win situation!
Just take a look at all the accessories included with the SINGER 1304:
- All-Purpose Foot
- Bobbins
- Buttonhole Foot
- Darning Plate
- Foot Control
- Instruction Manual
- Lint Brush
- Needle Plate Screwdriver
- Pack of Needles
- Power Cord
- Quick Start Guide
- Seam Ripper
- Spool Pin Felts
- Zipper Foot
To begin, all you need to do is select a stitch on the SINGER Start 1304 and sew! It’s a perfect machine for beginners because as we said, the most popular stitches are pre-set into the machine with width and length controls, removing the guesswork and allowing your children to focus on the basics of sewing. The 1304 model has the following stitches: straight, zigzag, satin, blind hem, scallop, and a 4-step buttonhole. Your budding sewing enthusiast will be proud to show you their even and straight sewing product.
A free arm is always useful, and the SINGER Start 1304 doesn’t disappoint, All you have to do is move the extension table to access the free arm for sewing pant legs or sleeves.
And at just under 10 pounds, this machine is easily transportable to a sewing party, class, or wherever you want to get your sew on.
The SINGER Start 1304 can sew 350-400 stitches a minute, has three feet, and a low-bar food presser system. It’s a simple machine, but it’s definitely not a toy. We recommend this machine because it has all the features of a more advanced machine without extra features which are great but can sometimes be distracting or overwhelming to someone who is learning to sew.
If you enjoy sewing and your child shows an interest in learning, adding this machine to your arsenal would allow you to teach your child to sew without the possibility of damaging your more adorned machine. It would also allow you to sew side by side with your children.
We really like that all you have to do is turn a dial to the stitch you want. The automatic bobbin winding is also a plus for new hobbyists (and in our opinion, a plus for everyone.)
Some customers felt that 1304 was a little advanced for a novice, but overall people felt that it’s a great starter machine. As with any sewing machine, children should always be supervised. Sewing machines do have needles.
But depending on your child’s age, they should be able to manage this machine after you’ve shown them how to use it and, like anything your kids are involved with, stay close by and keep an eye out. Some younger children may need more assistance if they can’t reach the foot pedal or may need to sit on your lap to reach the machine. But you’ll gauge the proper amount of guidance your child needs. They’ll likely need more support at first and you might need to guide their hands and fit, but they’ll soon become more independent as they increase their comfort with sewing.
